  After the Deluge
Slide projection, wall text, video drawing, 2007

Stemming from a research trip made by the artist to the Galapagos Islands in 2001, 'After the Deluge' draws influence from the ways in which the natural history of the archipelago is being culturally constructed through the current conservation programme. The conservation efforts are, in part, influenced by Charles Darwin's notes from 1835 of the islands' flora and fauna. As a result, it could be said that the islands which played such a significant role in forming the theory of evolution are having their own natural evolution frozen or regressed by land management strategies. This nominal regression to a period in the 19th century conjures spectres of empire and colonialism.
Commissioned by Vardy Gallery, University of Sunderland for 'North + South' an exhibition exploring ideas of Englishness, 'After the Deluge' is a body of work that includes a wall text, slide projection and video-drawing.
