Ask FM
FM transmitter, community contributions, mixing desk, radios, 2009 |
| |
'Ask FM' adopted the medium of the urban, pirate radio station to broadcast to the rural, Irish town of Askeaton, County Limerick. 'Ask FM' was commissioned by Askeaton Contemporary Arts as part of 'Welcome to the Neighbourhood' the town's annual arts festival which included a group of national and international artists.
Existing solely thanks to the participation and enthusiasm of local people the recordings were then broadcast from an undisclosed location back to the town over a 24 hour period. The station's contributors embraced all facets of the community including, a teenager singing wistfully about cars and girls, relentless Kerryman jokes read by a Kerryman, a mouth-organ-playing tour guide and a wannabe child star. Yet, the core focus of the broadcast was on low-level, political contributions from those involved with the non-profit structures and institutions forming the life-blood of the town, such as the local Credit Union, the Civic Trust and the community hall. |
