Video documentation of a kind of experiment
featuring the artist's pet budgerigar, Ronnie, his favourite
toy ball, a photograph of the ball and a card with a description
of the ball on it. An homage to Joseph Kosuth's seminal, conceptual
artwork of 1965, 'One and Three Chairs', the work explores the
slippery, philosophical gaps between our perceptions and uses
of language. In part, the participation and observation of an
animal injects an element of playfulness, chance and 'otherness'
into what could become a dry, cultural discourse. However, blue
budgerigars are selectively bred and, as such, are themselves
a product of culture - thereby offering an additional layer
of intrigue. |
